Designer FAQs: Choosing Quality Bedroom Furniture
I’ve been thinking about where to buy quality bedroom furniture. Why should I choose Ethan Allen?
We make about 75% of our furniture in our own North American workshops, and we are really obsessive about getting the details right. We operate our own sawmill in Vermont and kiln-dry our own wood rather than buying already-dried lumber from an outside supplier. We source as much wood as we can near our Vermont sawmill and near our lumber inspection center in Old Fort, North Carolina, and we prioritize wood from responsibly managed forests.
Our craftspeople take a lot of pride in their woodworking skills. At one station, you’ll see someone painstakingly choosing squared pieces of lumber and hand-gluing them together to create the perfect headboard. At another, you’ll see large, squared logs pass through an intricate lathe to be cut into beautiful turned bedposts, which are then taken and sanded by hand to prep the surface for a flawless finish.
Our drawers aren’t built by sliding boards into grooves or screwing flat corners together; we carve in the pins and tails of dovetail joinery, and we glue the joints by hand. We take time to carefully formulate finishes, and as each layer is applied—paint, stain, distressing, glaze, varnish, spatter—it’s inspected for quality before the next layer can be added. And it’s not just our wood craftsmanship that we’re proud of; every upholstered fabric or leather bed you purchase from Ethan Allen has been tailored by hand. We’re proud of our reputation for crafting high-end bedroom furniture and so much more. It’s an art we’ve been perfecting for nearly nine decades.
Is Ethan Allen a place where I can buy a bedroom set?
Yes! Several of our beds have coordinating bedside tables or additional storage: Continental, Burke, Merrick, Georgetown, and Cayman, to name a few. A lot of our bedroom storage pieces have a variety of dresser, chest, and night table options available, particularly our custom bedroom collection.
At the same time, Ethan Allen is a custom house, and a lot of our clients prefer to mix and match beds and furniture to create their own looks. The good news is that our furniture finishes are designed to coordinate, so it’s not hard to find a favorite bed that coordinates with a favorite pair of night tables, even if they don’t have the same names. If you want a white bedroom set, for example, find the styles you like, and if they have white furniture finishes, they’re most likely going to coordinate beautifully.
If you’re creating your own bedroom set, and you aren’t sure whether your pieces will go together, use our Designer Chat button to ask a designer. You can also order some free finish samples so you can see whether the finishes complement one another. It’s really easy to drop into a Design Center and spend some time chatting with one of our interior designers, or you can set up a home visit, where they can look at your space, take measurements, and get a sense of what changes you want to make.
If you’re a DIY person, you can re-create your bedroom in our 3D Room Planner and drop in 3D HD renderings of our furniture to get a very good idea of whether the set coordinates well. If you want to buy a separate piece, and you’re wondering whether it fits with the bedroom furniture you already have, try our EA inHome® app, which can show you what our furniture will look like in your space through the magic of augmented reality.
When I buy from Ethan Allen, how do I set up my bedroom furniture? Do I have to do it myself?
No! When you purchase from us, your order ships to one of our Service Centers, where it’s inspected carefully to make sure nothing affected it during transit. Then, our Premier In-Home Delivery specialists will bring your new bed, dresser, and/or night table, assemble it if needed, and place it exactly where you want it to go. If you buy a new mattress to go with your new bed, if you notify us beforehand, we’ll take your old mattress for recycling (local fees may apply)
