environmental commitment
preserving our resources for future generations
Our Objectives
Environmentally Conscious at Every Step
RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY
To obtain both the raw timber processed in our sawmill and lumberyard, and the purchased lumber that we use to make our custom furniture, we seek partners who supply wood that’s certified sustainable under industry-recognized standards, including the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. (AHMI). We also source from Guatemalan rubberwood plantations designed to replenish deforested land. More than 65% of the wood we source is comprised of certified reclaimed or recycled wood. See our Responsible Wood Sourcing Policy for more details.
In 2024, the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) designated Ethan Allen “Most Improved” for our gains on their Wood Scorecard. It’s an honor given to only one furniture retailer per year.
AIR QUALITY
We were one of the first furniture companies to voluntarily reduce hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) in our manufacturing by reformulating our finish chemicals and placing self-imposed limitations in our permits.
We use finishes that are low in volatile organic compounds (low-VOC) and in hazardous air pollutants (low-HAP), including many water-based finishes on our upholstered furniture. These finishes help to keep the air cleaner, from our workshops all the way to your home.
FOAMS & FABRICS
To wrap our upholstery frames, our artisans use low-VOC, CertiPUR-US® certified foams. That means our foams contain no harmful ozone depleters, carcinogenic flame retardants, or formaldehyde—just a foundation for years of comfort and coziness.
We have also committed, where and when reasonably feasible, to be PFAS free throughout our products including area rugs, broadloom, draperies, and fabrics.
