Designer FAQs: Leather Recliner Chairs

Ethan Allen’s leather recliners: faux leather or real?

Our genuine leather recliners are crafted from real leather—no splits, castoffs, bonded pieces, or vinyl matching. Our artisans only use complete hides when tailoring our leather recliners, and we cut and color-blend each by hand.

Where do I find the best genuine leather recliners?

We humbly submit that our leather recliners are made by the best artisans on the planet! Every recliner is tailored by hand over an engineered wood frame that’s fitted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, with pieces glued, stapled and/or nailed together for extraordinary durability (a bonus: much of the wood we source for our frames comes from responsibly managed forests).

We wrap double-layered foam and fiber batting to each frame by hand. Our cushions are made from CertiPUR-US® certified foams, which meet the industry’s highest standards for content, emissions, and durability.

Then comes the leather, which is cut and color-blended from artisan-dyed hides and then tailored by hand around each frame. Final touches like welting or nailhead trim are applied by hand.

What’s the best leather choice for a living room recliner?

It all depends on two things: 1) what you want your leather recliner to look like when you bring it home and 2) how you want your leather to evolve over time.

For the day you bring it home—

  • What’s your color preference? You can go ultra-traditional and choose a leather in chocolatey brown, cognac, or espresso black, or you can pick something in teal, emerald, or wine—we offer all kinds of options.
  • What character do you want your leather to have? Some leather dyes show the character of the hide, with all its color variations and natural markings, and some aficionados love that look. We also offer leathers in which we’ve buffed off the top of the hide and dyed it opaquely for edge-to-edge evenness—think of a car interior.

For how you want your leather to evolve—

  • Do you want it to have scratches and differences in shading, like a bomber jacket, as it matures?
  • Do you want it to look as close as it can to the way it looked when you brought it home for as long as possible?

Visit our leather library to learn about our leather options and to order up to 10 free swatches. Swatch availability can vary, so if you can’t order the one you want to see, stop by a Design Center to see dozens of leather options close up.

You can also ask a designer to help you choose a leather—their help is always complimentary—or download our leather brochure to take our leather quiz.

What kinds of leather recliner chairs are appropriate for theater seating?

The answer depends on what the house rules are in your home theater. If you’re going to allow snacking and beverages, you may want to consider a protected leather. A designer can help you make the right selection.

All of our leathers are tailored by hand over a durable engineered or kiln-dried hardwood frame (as a bonus, we source much of our wood from responsibly managed forests). We only use CertiPUR-US® certified foams that meet the industry’s highest standards for contents, durability, and emissions.

Any genuine leather recliner will require some TLC, whether you place it in your living room or elsewhere. These are our top tips:

  • Blot any spills as soon as they happen. Try not to rub the liquid into the leather, and don’t use commercial cleaners.
  • Watch out for the keys in your pocket and the rivets on your jeans; leather is really durable, but sharp objects can puncture it.
  • Don’t place your leather near heating and A/C vents or in direct sunlight.

By the way, if you want the laidback movie theatre vibe of a leather recliner and the cozy togetherness of a sofa, try our leather incliner sofa.

It says your leather recliners are in stock. Are they still custom quality?

Yes! We’ve chosen our best-loved frames and tailored them in our best-loved leathers, making just enough in advance to ensure they’re ready to ship, but they’re still made with all the quality and artistry you expect from Ethan Allen.

If you want a different leather, go for it! We’ll make it to order in our North American workshops. It may take a little longer, but the wait is worth it.

How do your leather recliner chairs work? Are they push-back or power recliners?

We offer a limited warranty on all push-back and power recliner motion mechanisms, but if your lifestyle is a little more rough and tumble—kids constantly raising and lowering the living room recliners available in Design Centers.

We offer a limited warranty on all motion mechanisms, but if your lifestyle is a little more rough and tumble—kids constantly raising and lowering the recliner, for instance!—think about investing in a protection plan.
