Designer FAQs: Find the Best Mattress for Your Sleep Style

What is the very best rated mattress available?

If you’ve had a sleeping partner, then you’ve had one of those Goldilocks conversations: “This mattress is too firm” or “this mattress is too soft.” You know it’s not just about how highly a third party rates the quality of a mattress; it’s about which mattress characteristics help you get the best night’s sleep.

At Ethan Allen, we sell Ethan Allen’s EA SignatureTM and Luna Gel mattresses, plus our bed-in-a-box mattress, DREAM eazzzTM. Because we manage the quality process from start to finish, we know the details of how they’re made, and you can feel confident that they’re worthy of the name Ethan Allen.

If you need a starting place for finding the best mattress for your sleep style, try our sleep survey.

What types of mattresses do you offer?

At Ethan Allen, we sell two types of mattresses:

  1. Hybrid mattresses, which are a mix of pocket coils (also called innersprings), memory foam, and other materials
  2. Memory foam-only mattresses

Our hybrid mattresses are available in different comforts:

  • Firm mattresses for maximum support—often best for stomach sleepers
  • Plush mattresses for midrange support—often great for back sleepers and those who change positions often
  • Ultra plush mattresses for maximum pressure relief—often good for side sleepers

We then offer a range of specific mattresses designed to deliver maximum value at all price points. Each mattress is available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.

We also offer our bed-in-a-box DREAM eazzzTM mattresses for those who want the convenience of having their mattress delivered via UPS. Select our standard memory foam version or opt for the copper-latex version; both offer outstanding support, with the copper infusion adding antimicrobial properties.

Which mattress is best to buy?

When you’re making your decision, consider the following:

  • Your sleep style: side, back, stomach, or a combination
  • Special concerns, like feeling overheated when you sleep
  • Partner vibes: are they a tosser and turner (or are you)?

Another important consideration is the height of your final sleep surface, or the distance from your floor to the top of your mattress. You’ll need to consider the space between the floor and your bed slats, the height of your foundation, and the height of your mattress.

  • Most people prefer to sleep 24 to 30 inches above the floor.
  • If you have special needs, like the need to transfer from a wheelchair to your bed, you may prefer a specific height that makes the transfer easier—make sure to calculate that before making your purchase.
  • A lower sleep surface tends to work better in modern décor, while a taller bed height has a more classic feel.

In addition to your mattress height, the number one factor in your sleep surface position is the height of your foundation. Our mattresses come with specially designed foundation options matched to their specifications, and we also sell an ultra-low foundation that works for any mattress.

Do you offer an adjustable bed base?

We do! Our Prodigy PT motion base is a great choice for people who need an adjustable bed for medical reasons—and for those who want to splurge on premium comfort features. Just keep in mind that not every mattress is compatible with our motion base, so check the product page to confirm.

How long should you keep a mattress before buying a new one?

It’s normal for a mattress to develop body impressions, even after just a few months of use. With proper care, they can last many years. Here are a few of our tips for keeping your mattress in great shape:

  • Rotate your mattress and foundation 180 degrees every 18 months or so. You don’t need to flip it.
  • Vacuum the surface of your mattress once a year.
  • Use a mattress pad to keep the surface neat and clean, and to add even more comfort to your sleep experience.
  • If you move your mattress, try not to fold it. Carry it on its side, and only use the handles for minor adjustments, not for carrying over a distance.

Our mattresses come with a 10-year warranty for materials and workmanship, provided that you pair it with the right kind of foundation. Ask a designer if you’re not sure about your foundation options.
